This type of lower back pain is sometimes rare but it can be misdiagnosed as something else. Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder that occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed by the piriformis muscle, causing pain, tingling down the leg.

This form of lower back pain is a chronic buttock pain that may radiate down the leg, it is worse when walking and squatting. The Piriformis muscle usually runs superior to the sciatic nerve (87% of the cases) and sometimes the relationship between the muscle and the nerve can change.Piriformis syndrome - Dr Gert FerreiraPiriformis syndrome - Dr Gert Ferreira

Risk factors:

  • Prior history of piriformis syndrome
  • Blunt trauma
  • Sitting in one position for a long time
  • Long distance driving or biking

Treatment:

We must realize that 90% of the symptoms and pain will improve with time, normally within 18-24 months

A chiropractor can definitely treat this type of pain by doing the following:

  • Spinal manipulation therapy
  • soft tissue therapy that includes accupuncture, massage, fascia release and kinesiology taping.
  • Home care -ICE therapy, stretching and a short term use of anti-inflammation medication.
  • Core stability training.
  • Postural advice

Prognosis:

The prognosis of this condition is very good if the patient goes for conservative treatment and does the home treatment. It can turn into a chronic condition if it is ignored.
