An intervertebral disc is a fibrocartilagenous material that sit between two vertebrae. An injury that occurs more in males than in females and the highest incident age is between 35-45. Normally there is a sudden onset of lower back pain and potentially leg pain past the knee. You will most likely have had a previous episode of lower back pain. Pain might follow after heavy lifting, twisting or repetitive stress. The pain that will be describe is normally a sharp, shooting or electrical pain.

Risk factors involved:

  • Chronic overloading the disc
  • Trauma - fall or motor vehicle accident
  • Poor posture
  • muscular imbalance
  • Family history
  • Asymmetrical loading and twisting

The 4 stages of disc injury can be seen below:

Treatment:

We must realize that 90% of the symptoms and pain will improve with time, normally within 18-24 months

A chiropractor can definitely treat this type of pain by doing the following:

  • Spinal manipulation therapy
  • soft tissue therapy that includes accupuncture, massage, fascia release and kinesiology taping.
  • Home care -ICE therapy, stretching and a short term use of anti-inflammation medication.
  • Core stability training.
  • Postural advice

Prognosis:

90% of the patients will have resolution of symptoms within 3 months of onset.

The sooner you are up and moving the better prognosis there will be, although flare-ups might occur. After about 6 weeks of treatment and no improvement then a surgical consultation might be warranted.
