The definition of costochondritis is an inflammatory process of 1 or more costochondral cartilages that causes localozed tenderness and pain in the anterior chest wall. The costochondral cartilages is basically the cartilage between the ribs and the sternum(chest bone). History and symptoms:

  • Moderate to severe anterior chest wall pain
  • insidious onset occurring over days to weeks
  • Pain is usually on the one side of the chest
  • Pain may be made worse by coughing or sneezing.

Risk factors:

  • Direct trauma
  • Aggressive exercise
  • Upper respiratory tract infection with a cough.

 

Treatment:

  • Spinal manipulation therapy
  • soft tissue therapy that includes accupuncture, massage, fascia release and kinesiology taping.
  • Home care -ICE therapy, stretching and a short term use of anti-inflammation medication.

Prognosis of costochondritis is excellent, full recovery is expected. Resolution usually occurs in several weeks or months, relapse may occur.
